This is one of the Trend Micro detections on the recent Stegoloader malware that affected healthcare organizations in North America. Steganography is a technique where malicious codes are embedded in image files to avoid detection.

This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

As of this writing, the said sites are inaccessible.

It connects to certain websites to send and receive information. It deletes itself after execution.

This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Trojan drops the following files:

  • %User Temp%\~{random digits}.tmp - contains system information

(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Temp on Windows Vista, 7, and 8.)

It injects codes into the following process(es):

  • explorer.exe

This Trojan accesses the following websites to download files:

This Trojan gathers the following data:

  • Host Name

This Trojan connects to the following website to send and receive information:

  • http://{BLOCKED}.{BLOCKED}.166.33/report_N_0013_{hex value}_{report status}

It deletes itself after execution.

It terminates itself if any of the conditions are met:

  • If any of the following processes is present in the system:
    • aswVBoxClient.exe
    • PEiD.exe
    • SandboxieDcomLaunch.exe
  • If the following registry is present:
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine

This malware relies on steganography to evade detection. It connects to specific URLs to download a stock image, where majority of its routines are embedded. It then extracts the following from the downloaded image:

  • Arbitrary code
  • List of URLs to be accessed

Minimum Scan Engine: 9.750

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Note that not all files, folders, and registry keys and entries are installed on your computer during this malware's/spyware's/grayware's execution. This may be due to incomplete installation or other operating system conditions. If you do not find the same files/folders/registry information, please proceed to the next step.

Restart in Safe Mode

Search and delete this file

Step 6

Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as TROJ_GATAK.SMJV. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
